ACTION
ALERT: Sign-On Letter, Phone Senators Opposing
New Efforts to Link Minimum Wage to Estate Tax
Reduction, Other Bad Legislation
9/6/06
We
are concerned that legislation similar to this
summer's so-called
"Trifecta" bill linking minimum wage
to the estate tax may be reintroduced into the
Senate in the immediate future, possibly in the
next week or two. OR, as the Capitol Hill newspaper
"The Hill" reports, minimum wage could
be tied to other legislation such as a package
extending tax cuts minus estate tax rollback or
small business health care.
As
we were in August, the Let Justice Roll steering
committee is strongly
opposed to any bill which seeks to reduce or repeal
the estate tax even if
it has a minimum wage increase. (See our August
3 alert, for example, at
http://www.letjusticeroll.org/pressroom/alert7-31.html.)
We
will alert you immediately if the minimum wage
is attached to other
counterproductive legislation or stand-alone legislation
is introduced with
poison pills.
Here
is what you can do right now:
ACORN,
a Let Justice Roll steering committee member,
is circulating a
national organizational sign-on letter thanking
senators who voted against
the first "Trifecta" bill and urging
them to reject any future measure that
reduces the estate tax EVEN if it has a minimum
wage increase. Please sign on to that letter --
as well as state letters -- by going to:
http://acorn.org/index.php?id=10628.
You will need to do so not later than
Tuesday, September 12th.
We
also urge you (if your senator is listed here)
to be in direct contact
with the following senators who voted against
the first "Trifecta" bill: Washington
State: Cantwell and Murray; Arkansas: Pryor; Louisiana:
Landrieu; Ohio: Voinovich; New Jersey: Menendez;
Colorado: Salazar; Rhode Island: Chafee. See the
list below of phone numbers for these senators.
Please
thank these senators for their previous vote against
the "Trifecta
bill," and urge them to vote NO on any bill
that holds the minimum wage
hostage to estate tax reduction or repeal.
If appropriate, please identify
yourself as a member of the Let Justice Roll Living
Wage Campaign. Let
your senators know if you are a member of the
clergy or part of a faith
community and feel comfortable doing so.
Senators
will be under severe pressure to change their
votes. Urge them to reaffirm their opposition
to any legislation that couples a reduction in
the estate tax with a minimum wage increase.
Please
continue to check our website www.letjusticeroll.org
for regular updates. We are updating the website
now to reflect the latest
developments.
Thanks.
